The Reversal of Time is a sound installation that uses the mechanisms of six clocks to create a metaphor for the impossible desire to reverse time. Housed in a clear plastic vitrine, the clocks continue to operate normally, their hands moving forward as a microphone captures the sound of their mechanisms. A computer program reverses this sound in real time and transmits it through speakers, creating the auditory illusion of time running backward.

The contrast between the clocks’ actual movement and their reversed sound establishes the central metaphor. While time proceeds irreversibly, the installation offers the sensation that its passage can be undone. The clocks measure time as they always have, yet their altered sound suggests an alternative reality in which what has passed might somehow be reclaimed.

Through this simple technological intervention, Richard Humann gives form to the human desire to return to an earlier moment, recover what has been lost, or imagine a different outcome. The installation cannot change time itself; it can only alter our perception of its passage. The Reversal of Time transforms the familiar sound of clock mechanisms into a meditation on memory, loss, and the enduring tension between our desire to revisit the past and the reality of time’s continuous forward movement.
